The Trouble with Linux

posted by Tyrantmizar at 6:04 pm EST on November 2, 2005

In a word: User-unfriendly.

I’ve tried out Fedora, a distribution of Linux. It works pretty well with the stuff it comes with. But it is difficult to tell what exactly I can and can’t do.

There is one big problem: I can’t figure out how to install anything (luckily, many of my main applications come with an “update” feature). There are very few documentations of this online, and fewer still are simple and easy to understand (”run tarball” what the heck does that mean?).

Linux (any of the distributions) could be a great system, but it really needs to stop focusing exclusively on the tech people and programmers and start focusing on Windows users and computer beginners. It is just too hard to switch from Windows to Linux at this present moment.

If you want a much better comparison between Windows and Linux, check out this in-depth blog post by Greg Raiz. I suck at explaining things.
